On 11-24 June, the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry hosted the 22nd European Grassland Federation (EGF) Symposium at the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania in Vilnius.

The focus of the Symposium was on “The Future Role of Ley-Farming in Cropping Systems” and included comparisons between temporary and permanent grasslands in terms of ecosystem service delivery.

The SUPER-G project was represented through oral presentations provided by Stanislav Hejduk (Mendel University), Paul Newell Price (ADAS) and René Schils (Wageningen Research), on “The effect of farmyard manure application on renewed, high nature value grassland”, “Establishing multi-species leys – challenges and benefits” and “Modelling soil carbon measures on dairy farms” respectively; and posters from Barbara Borawska-Jarmułowicz, Maria Janicka, Grażyna Mastalerczuk and Piotr Stypiński (all Warsaw University of Life Sciences – WULS)

The main message from the Symposium was that including grass or herbal leys in crop rotations can help close nutrient cycles (particularly nitrogen from legumes), improve soil fertility, control arable weeds and contribute to the three main environmental goals of the European Green Deal and Farm to Fork strategies: tackling climate change; protecting natural resources and enhancing biodiversity.
